Modern slavery on our screens!

Have you spotted that both Netflix and the BBC are currently portraying modern slavery plotlines in some of their most popular programmes?

In Eastenders, Okie and Ravi are manipulating and ‘cuckooing’ Kojo. ‘Cuckooing’ is when a criminal organisation takes over the home of a vulnerable person, using it as a base of operations for drug dealing, trafficking or storing illegal goods. In the past, cuckooing has been depicted in crime dramas such as Line of Duty and Happy Valley - it is encouraging to see a soap opera like Eastenders using its platform to educate and inform.

Similarly, the incredibly popular novel and now film, The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, has a modern slavery and human trafficking plot line.

We can’t say much without giving it away but do watch the film and take the opportunity to talk about the issue with others!
